University of Bern

Dr. Safroneeva obtained her B.Sc. from University of Toronto, ON, Canada, and Ph.D. in mucosal immunology from McMaster University, ON, Canada. She completed her postdoctoral fellowships in the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, McMaster University, ON, Canada, and at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern. She is currently a senior researcher at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern.

The objective of her research is to study outcome assessment in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). The team of international collaborators, with Dr. Safroneeva in the lead, have developed EoE activity index patient-reported outcomes instrument that has been used in various phase 2 and 3 clinical trials and observational studies. She explored patients’ perspective on therapy goals and satisfactions with various EoE therapies, and conducted epidemiologic studies including those on natural history, and time-dependent development of strictures and other complications. Together with clinicians and scientists of Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers (CEGIR), European Society of EoE Researchers (EUREOS), and Alimeniv Inc., the applicant led core outcome set development exercise to aid in standardization of outcome assessment in EoE. As lead investigator, the applicant has been involved in a number of Swiss- and US-based studies examining the relationship between various patient-reported measures and biologic activity.
